💻 [OBO DIGEST] 400 Million Creators
More Pinterest rumors, IG link stickers, & trusting your gut…
Written by: Online Business Owner • November 01, 2021
Thanks for all of your love last week with the launch of OnlineBusinessOwner.com and this new weekly digest newsletter! Will you help us out this week by sending The Digest to a friend?
By now you’ve heard that the Facebook company is changing its name to Meta. It felt meta to take up too much space in this week’s digest to cover it (we don’t REALLY know what it the metaverse is just yet, there’s plenty of hot takes already out there about the rebrand, AND the announcement may just be more distraction than substance).
I like this take from Shaan Puri -- the metaverse isn’t a place, it’s a time. 🤯
PS: And I did buy the MetaverseBusinessOwner.com URL just in case (but didn’t go as hard as Mahdi Woodard did with his Meta URL buying spree).

You Get a Link! You Get a Link!
Instagram’s Link Sticker for Stories is now available to EVERYONE! Instagram explains, “When we first introduced Stories links, the feature was limited to verified accounts or those with a certain number of followers. We’ve heard from the rest of our community that they also want to share things that matter....”
As with all social changes, the update is being added to accounts slowly. Instagram also states that new accounts along with those that violate Community Guidelines won’t have access to the sticker.
Is the update all for the betterment of the ‘Gram? Maybe! It could also be a way to get back on the good side of creators. In recent weeks, reports have surfaced that Instagram officials are concerned about the app’s future. A recent NY Times article details how Meta (AKA Facebook) execs consider losing young Instagram users to TikTok and Snapchat as an “existential threat” to the platform. IG has found lots of love amongst Millennials and their parents. But the crowd they’re most focused on keeping and attracting these days is teens and youth (the audience they may put at the most risk according to recent leaks and their newest whistleblower).
Why this matters for online business
Link Stickers are a welcomed addition to IG for business owners because it means you can now get your audience to your website, blog, podcast, sales page, or shop faster! Keep in mind that users may not always be the clicking type and that your audience may prefer chatting or purchasing via DM over visiting a link. Try out the link sticker this week and see how your followers respond!
The New Creator Manifesto
A newly commissioned study of the creator economy from software platform MightyNetworks finds that today’s creator economy of 50 million could grow to over 400 million in the next 3 years.
Through conversations with over 1,600 creators - the largest study of the industry completed to date - researchers found that while the game of building a creator business may be fun, it’s rigged. The study uncovered 4 key principles to help creators succeed -- they’re calling it “The New Creator Manifesto”. Check out here.
Why this matters for online business
While you may not consider yourself a creator, running an online business requires looking at the world and showing up as a creator. This study elevates some of the major concerns for us as we continue to build our brands on social media and provides insights into how you can own your audience and income without relying on changing algorithms.
