4 Ways To Magnetically Sell Your Offer
Written by: Holly MacCue • May 23, 2023
If you're stuck at $3K-$5K months, exhausted from the cycle of posting & messaging to get clients, waste a bunch of money whenever you try paid ads, or generally struggle to attract the “right” clients…
Well, I am sure you know how it feels when you put something out that really resonates with people.
Or at the very least you know what it feels like to be magnetically drawn in by some content (even if you know it is likely to be marketing or selling something).
Think back to some of the most powerful or most recent times you’ve had that feeling.
Were you kind of “meh” and lukewarm about it at the start but then it suddenly drew you in?
….or were you captivated right from the very first things you noticed about the message?
It shook me to my core when I learned that in today’s ‘noisy’ world:
You have less than 2.5 seconds to stop the scroll
That is how long you have to capture someone’s attention.
(About as long as it will take you to read this sentence now)
The need to capture and captivate your audience’s attention from the first impression holds true regardless of the platform or media — i.e. through video, image, text, audio, etc
Picture this:
There they are, your perfect ideal client or customer, taking a minute away from their busy life to scroll through a social media feed.
And along the way….they come across your ad or your latest post.
They see it and both immediately and subconsciously they assess it and filter it.
Without conscious thought, they decide to either stop the scroll or to continue on.
So the question is… why should they stop for your content and your message?
Why should they give their attention to it over everything else on their feed?
Having a weak answer to this question is one of the biggest messaging and marketing mistakes I see business owners make — not just on their social media, but across all facets of their sales and marketing too.
Answering this question centers around the type of person you’re trying to attract…
Perhaps you know who your audience is. Maybe you’ve even done the research and built an avatar. That’s not the point. I'm talking about whether they're the right type of person.
Are they ready for your offer?
Is it one that they need?
Will it excite them? Help them? Impact them?
In my experience, this is the first hurdle many business owners trip on.
In the past, you could navigate this with certain sales and marketing tactics. But many of those are no longer relevant when you only have a few seconds to capture someone's attention.
Plus, that doesn't account for keeping their attention long enough to get your message across.
I talked about this in great detail on The OBO Podcast, so tune in here. After recording my conversation with Vernon, I wanted to expand on the topic with a fresh perspective.
Because unless you start targeting the right people with the right message, no amount of sales tips or tactics will help. Everything you try will fall short, or at least cost you far too much in the long run.
How To Magnetically Sell Your Offer
Right now, you have two choices…
Attract your ideal customer with relevant and magnetizing content
Pitch your ideal customer with various methods of outreach (You know, sliding into DMs, emailing, commenting on social, that sort of thing…)
It’s much easier to attract your ideal customer rather than going after them yourself. Doing so saves you time, stress, energy, money, the list goes on.
But in my experience, this is something many business owners get wrong because they’re 1) targeting the wrong people, and 2) targeting them with the wrong content.
And this is more costly than ever because don't forget… you only have 2.5 seconds to hook them!
Here are 4 ways you can seize this opportunity to stop the scroll and stand out with a fresh, modern approach.
1. Start At The Finish Line
Too many business owners start at the beginning, thinking about their skills and how they can help the people they serve.
But it’s time to stop being logical, because you shouldn't start with you.
Let me explain…
Think about the last time you bought something you were excited about.
Perhaps it was a fancy car, a dreamy vacation, or the latest piece of tech. Or maybe it was something small, like your favorite chocolate bar or a pair of shoes.
Whatever it was, close your eyes and revisit the feeling, your joy in purchasing it.
Why did you feel this way?
Probably because it was something you wanted. Not something you needed, per se, but rather you desired it (whatever the reason may be).
People love to buy what they want. They want feelings of joy, happiness, satisfaction, and fulfillment after a purchase. This is where your customer journey should begin.
So step into your customer’s shoes and ask yourself: What do they want?
What will ignite these positive feelings?
Because it isn’t about your offer. At least not in the beginning.
Hone in on what will make your customer feel. Without this core emotional pull, it’s hard to stop the scroll and capture your audience’s attention — let alone keep it.
This also gives you a greater perspective on WHO your ideal customer is.
But don’t stop there. Go deeper.
2. Deeply Understand "Who" You Serve
Once you know what your ideal audience wants, you'll start to understand more about who they are:
What motivates them…
Where they hang out…
What holds them back…
How they operate (or fail to)…
This process allows you to build a more sophisticated avatar. Yet it blows me away how many business owners dive into the research, but stop before actually speaking to them.
Creating an avatar that looks good on paper but doesn’t go beneath the surface is foolish. This practice causes many business owners to settle for what they “think” will work, who they “think” they are, and fail to connect with their audience.
To truly know who they are, you need to pick up the phone, book a call or go to a networking event so you can…
Have conversations with them…
Engage on social media…
Ask them questions…
And simply observe them!
Getting to know who they really are and honing in on what they actually want will lay a solid foundation to capture their attention — and keep it.
While this brings you back to the starting line, what comes next could make or break your offer.
3. Show Up & Show Up Consistently
More often than not, business owners are invisible online.
Sure, they tick a few boxes by creating a website and setting up social media accounts, but they don’t add any substance.
So even if you do manage to stop the scroll, there's nothing for prospects to click on or learn more about.
Does your website offer value?
What will they find if they Google you?
Are your social media accounts robust, educational, even active?!
If you are online, is there anything that leads to creating more connection and confidence with your audience?
Connection: a feeling of trust, rapport, and relevancy.
Confidence: knowing you are who and what they need; the expert they’ve been looking for.
Everything you put out online should exude this — your social media bios, the copy on your website, articles written about you on Google…
If you want to be real and relevant, you have to be visible.
Otherwise, all the effort you put into capturing their attention is for nothing.
4. Be Clear From The Get-Go
The final step to attracting the right people is remembering that time is of the essence.
You need to capitalize on those 2.5 seconds, and maybe a few more to keep their attention. So your job is to make them feel something.
It happens so quickly, so make sure your message is clear:
Be specific about who you serve…
Be clear about how you serve them…
Be unique in your style and personality…
If you can achieve this instantly, you'll set yourself up as the expert they need.
Put This Into Action
It all seems rather simple, yet most people get it wrong because they start in the wrong place.
There are people out there who need your help. Whatever your offer solves, the people with that problem want to work with you — today.
The problem is that 1) they don’t know you, and 2) you don’t know them.
And because everyone’s rushing around, scrolling through thousands of posts a day, the chances of you and them somehow aligning are slim.
So by stepping back and getting clear on what they want, the “thing” that will make them excited to buy from you, will make all the difference.
Because buying something you want feels great.
And you can create this for your customer. But it doesn’t just "happen." It requires intention.
I'm grateful for my conversation with Vernon on the OBO Podcast inspiring me to write this article for you.
And now having read it, I hope you're inspired to go find the right people who need you.
But don’t stop there, because that alone isn't enough.
Learn about who they are (on a deep level).
Educate them about who you are (in an engaging manner).
Be crystal clear in how you can help them (and show up where they need you to).
Once you do, you will magnetize the right people to you and your offer.
You’ll no longer waste time and money searching high and low, testing one outreach tactic after another. You won't create content only for it to miss the mark.
Instead, you’ll stop the scroll, and, more importantly, lead them to keep scrolling deep into your world.
