One of the greatest things about being a business owner is getting to choose what you do and don’t do. And one of the worst things about being a business owner is getting to choose what you do and don’t do. Because decision fatigue -- is very REAL.

If you haven’t heard of it before, decision fatigue (sometimes called ‘ego depletion’) is what happens when you make too many decisions over a certain amount of time leading to worse decisions as time goes by. It’s why after a long day of putting out fires in your business cereal sounds like a great dinner and whatever auto-plays next on Netflix is your idea of a fun night in. It’s why that weirdo Mark Zuckerberg wears the same zip-up hoodie every day and Steve Jobs loved his black mock turtleneck (it’s one less decision to make in a day).

And while running your own business can be the most epic game of “choose your own adventure,” your decision-making supply can get depleted FAST if you’re not careful. That means as you hit the “fu$k it!” point of decision-making in the course of your day, you risk making decisions that could derail you and your business for a day, a week, or longer.

To help, here are 3 simple questions you can keep handy the next time you’re making a big business decision and feeling on the edge of decision-making burn out…

  1. Does this connect with MY vision or someone else’s? Meaning: do I want this or am I just distracted by what everyone else is doing?

  2. What will it cost? Meaning: what is the financial, time, material, and human cost of doing (or not) doing this thing?

  3. Is it worth it? Meaning: is the tradeoff in time/money/materials/people worth the outcome I’m working toward?

Go out there this week and keep choosing your own adventure. BUT, make sure you don’t go so far off the trail that you get lost and can’t find your way back. 🧭

3 Things You Can Do This Week to Help Fight Back Against Decision Fatigue

  1. Get a good night’s sleep (quality matters over quantity). Remember that your business-building energy is found in your bedroom...not what’s in your coffee mug.

  2. Stop cramming so much into each and every day. Ease up on all of those Zoom calls and clean up your calendar to give yourself some breathing room.

  3. Pay attention to your body-ody-doy. You may not realize it now; but, when you’re experiencing decision fatigue your body is telling you! If you’re tired, feeling foggy, and irritable to boot...then it’s probably time for a break from decision making.
